America's mothers and daughters provided a vital, but largely ignored mission during WWII - they flight tested and ferriedplanes from the plants that were pumping aircarft out as fast as our industrial might would permit to our Army Air Force. Once the war was over, their service to America was pretty much forgotten. Several years ago the Congress gave them some limited benefits in 1977. Of the more than 1000 WASP is it estimated that only 300 are live today. Thirty-eight WASP pilots were killed during WWII and never recieved even a flag draped casket. And, when
some died on duty other WASP's had to help pay their funeral costs.
Today, some of that was set right and the WASP's were awarded the
Congressional Gold Medal for their service to our country.
Sadly, way to late for most of these flying female patriots.
Salute!
